A new research demonstrated that training of breathing muscles with high resistance exercises improves tolerance for exercise in older and middle-aged adults
There are several benefits of exercise, and many of the middle-aged and old age adults struggle to meet recommendations of such physical activities. Now researchers at University of Colorado Boulder found that high-resistance inspiratory muscle strength training (IMST) can help adults in middle and older age to boost their tolerance for exercises transiting to a healthier lifestyle. The study was presented at the annual meeting of the American Physiological Society, at Experimental Biology 2022, where the study also demonstrated that this method can improve specific aspects of metabolism, when it is practiced daily.
The researchers recruited 35 participants aging 50 and above and divided into either a low-resistance control group or a high-resistance training to explore how exactly IMST improves tolerance for exercise in these subjects. The team assigned both the groups with breathing device for around five minutes each day for a period of six weeks. When the program was completed it was found that the subjects in the group high-resistance training showed 12% improved time on treadmill for exhaustion test and the performance of subjects in the low-resistance training group remained unchanged.
Moreover, the scientists also found that levels of 18 different metabolites specifically those that help in energy generation and metabolism of fatty acids, were changed in high-resistance training group. According to the scientists, daily sessions of IMST for five minutes is a promising way of making exercise seem more appealing among adults in mid and old age, which would eventually encourage healthy lifestyles. As per the team, using IMST could be a strategy to promote adherence and enhance different components of health in these adults.
