Radiation therapy currently is among the greatest treatments available against cancer, however it could help a lot if it is more targeted for sparing the healthy cells. Currently, researchers from Japan have designed nanoparticles that could penetrate the tumors while killing them from inside, after being triggered by exterior X-rays.
Generally, radiation therapy’s mechanism by damaging the cancer cell DNA, and a part of this damage comes through generating the reactive species of oxygen. However this needs oxygen, which could be limited at the site of tumors, limiting the treatment’s efficiency. So for this new study, researchers from the Kyoto University investigated an altered way for using radiation for killing cancer cells. The team designed nanoparticles which infiltrate tumors, which once inside, can be triggered by X-rays for destroying the cells with the help of a different way –photoelectric effect, in which a material releases electrons, responding to the electromagnetic radiation. These nanoparticles are prepared from organosilica which carry iodine within their pores. Iodine there is an active ingredient, releasing electrons after being irradiated at comparatively low levels. Then the electrons cause the double-strand breaks within cancer cell’s nuclear DNA, triggering cell death.
Through tests scientists found that nanoparticles inclined to congregate only outside the cancer cells’ nuclei, and half-hour of the X-ray radiation remained enough for wiping them out in just three days. The simple concept to kill cancer with the help of nanoparticles, which are activated through outside radiation, is not new, however it comes within a variety of forms. Earlier studies have utilized nanoparticles which internally kill cancer through heating up, changing the acidity, letting go drugs or the reactive oxygen species, otherwise starving it of nutrients. Today releasing electrons might potentially be a novel weapon within the arsenal.
