Russia to Register COVID-19 Vaccine on August 12

According to Oleg Gridnev, Russian Deputy Health Minister, Russia’s COVID-19 vaccine will receive official registration on August 12.

The world has been fighting a global pandemic for the past seven months. As the novel coronavirus is wreaking havoc across the globe, a myriad of strategies is currently being tested to combat the virus. Research institutes and Pharma companies around the world are in a race to develop an effective vaccine or drug to combat the virus. As of August 10, the virus has infected more than 19 million individuals and killed more than 731,453 people around the world. The Russian university has now completed the human clinical trials of the world’s first COVID-19 vaccine and plans to register the vaccine on August 12.

The vaccine was developed by the Russian Defence Ministry and Gamaleya Research Institute. To date, no vaccine has been approved for the novel coronavirus, which has so far infected millions of individuals in the world. According to Oleg Gridnev, Russian Deputy Health Minister, Russia’s COVID-19 vaccine will receive official registration on August 12 amid its final phase of testing. Moreover, the team has revealed how the vaccine will work against the novel coronavirus. The researchers at Oxford University and American biotech company, Moderna are considered to be at the forefront of developing the coronavirus vaccine.

The team has confirmed that the vaccine is currently in the third phase of human trials in the United Kingdom. Human clinical trials of Russia’s COVID-19 vaccine began on June 18, 2020. Gridnev had said that the vaccine's efficacy will be decided when the population developed an immunity. Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) has raised concerns over COVID-19 vaccine after Moscow announced a target to start mass production in September 2020. The UN health agency urged Russia to follow the established vaccine guidelines before being rolled out. According to the WHO, six vaccine candidates are currently in the final phase of clinical trials.
