Sweden Built Wooden Wind Turbine Tower

Modvion is looking for a greener and cheaper materials to build a modular version of the wind towers to produce massive amounts of energy.

A Swedish company has created a new design for wind turbine towers, which are made of wood instead of steel. The new design can reach greater heights and produces more power. A Swedish design and engineering company named Modvion could become the icon of the turbine towers if its wooden wind turbine tower designs proved successful. The company has built a 30-meter wooden wind turbine tower at Gothenburg, Sweden, for research purposes. However, Modvion has also confirmed that the first tower will be built on a commercial scale as early as 2022.

The wooden tower will offer comparable performance to the traditional towers and made from permanently sourced materials. Moreover, the newly designed towers can be promising, greener, and cheaper solutions for renewable energy. In 2012, TimberTower, a German company has also erected a wooden tower in Hannover, Germany. These wooden towers need thick bases to support upper sections, making them very expensive to produce and to transport to the specified site. However, rules around load size on public roads often prove problematic while transporting the tower’s sections. Modvion is looking for a greener and cheaper materials to build a modular version of the wind towers to produce massive amounts of energy.

Modvion’s wooden towers are designed to reach heights of up to 120 meters at a considerably lower cost compared to those towers that are made from steel. Moreover, its modular design allows transporters to transport stackable sections on public roads without any problem. They are claimed to be carbon neutral from the day construction began. The proof-of-concept tower was built with the help of Moelven, a wood construction company at its Töreboda facility. Then the company transported wooden sections to Gothenburg around 124 miles away in late April 2020. If things go accordingly, Modvion plans to build 10 commercial-scale wooden wind turbine towers by 2022.
