A thyristor is an electrical conductive solid-state device having four layers of P and N-types materials interconnected through an electrolytic conversion. It behaves solely as a conductive switch, conducting electricity when the applied gate gets a pull, and continuing to conduct electricity until the input voltage across the device is turned either on or off. The mechanical advantage of a thyristor (or T-case) over other types of switches is that it is very simple and inexpensive. The two sides of a T-case are made of thin P-cases filled with mercury vapors. The two outer sides of a T-case can be made of any suitable material. It is possible to opt for a dual-hsipe T-case wherein the inner side of the case is identical to a traditional open-frame design and the outer side can be a metal plate suitable for the purpose.

A typical design for a thyristor consists of a collector plate having a metallic cover and the junction block at the other end having a metallic frame. The collector plate has two conductors with a metal cover and is fitted into a specially designed receptacle designed to receive and store the incoming electrical charge. This plate is then connected to a switching assembly containing a variable-current source, such as a V-check or a G-check, and is fixed to the outside edge of the collector plate. This assembly allows the control of the transfer of electricity from a source to the collector plate. The function of the switch or the gate-voltage control is to change the current depending upon the input signal passing through the switching assembly.
