Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) is a non-surgical procedure using specially designed contact lenses to gently reshape the curvature of the eye to improve vision. It is most frequently used to temporarily correct myopia (near-sightedness). Ortho-k can correct upwards of -6.00 diopters (D) of myopia. It is also useful in correction of lesser degrees of astigmatism, presbyopia and hyperopia. Overnight ortho-K lenses are most commonly used in comparison to daytime wear. According to the Eye Contact Lens journal 2016 data, in the U.S., an estimated 500,000 to one million people were using ortho-K, whereas nearly 1.5 million ortho-K wearers were reported in China. Developments in peripheral refraction testing in combination with customized lens design is expected to show better myopia control with ortho-K.

However, with increasing adoption of Ortho-K worldwide, potential complications associated with the treatment have become a significant concern. Potential complications associated with Ortho-K include microbial keratitis, lens binding, and corneal staining. Microbial keratitis remains as the most serious and sight-threatening complication of Ortho-K. Moreover, increasing visibility of fibrillary lines, epithelial pigment deposit, and transient changes of corneal biomechanical properties are other clinically insignificant side effects of orthokeratology lens.
